Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekov
Adapted by Craig Johnson

unclevanya_poster

Chekhov’s classic tale of hope and sorrow, love and heartbreak amidst daily life in rural Russia is rendered anew in this striking and touching adaptation by Craig Johnson which stays true to the generous spirit of Chekhov while blowing the dust off the sometimes musty translations of his work. Dialogue has been tightened, the humor brought forward, and the vividness of the characters preserved. Even though it takes place in provincial Russia in 1899, Uncle Vanya gently yet persistently addresses the issues of our day: environmental degradation, care for the poor, economic collapse, the threat of losing one’s home, and of course the joy and ache of love pursued, love within reach, and love lost.
