A theatrical tour-de-force: part ghost story, part literary classic
“Riveting…leaves
audiences on the edge of their seats” – NY Times
A young governess journeys to a lonely English manor house to care for two recently orphaned children. But she is not their first governess. And what happened at the manor is shrouded in the kind of secrets no one wants to talk about. In fact, the mysteries and fears surrounding the place only seem to deepen. When this new governess begins to see specters haunting the children, she believes she must find a way to stop the fiends, before it is too late. But are the ghosts real, or are they the product of her own fevered imagination? And just how far will she go to protect the innocence of a child?
Based on the provocative tale of suspense, horror and repressed sexuality, this stunning adaptation gives the famous story yet another turn of its own and taps into the deep wells of our imagination.
In this beautifully executed adaptation…the audience [is] forced, through subtly ambiguous shadings, to vividly project what is cleverly left unseen and unspoken. A dazzling act of the imagination. Mr. Hatcher has pushed James’ clever turn to its furthest degree.” —NY Times
